Project name: Proyecto Gakko no Go
Project description:
The Gakko no Go project started in 2008 with the aim to teach go in the school and has been developed, at least, in five schools affiliated to an educational and public catholic organization spread all over the country named “Fe y Alegría” (Faith and Happiness, founded to teach low income family children and also teenagers). Gakko no Go project was born when, in 2008, a young and enthusiastic catholic Sister and teacher named Marisela Mujica, was enchanted by Hikaru no Go comic. She proposed Loli Puerta to dictate a Go game workshop to schoolchildren on Saturdays.gakko-avgjesusm The name of the school is ¨Jesús Maestro¨ , it is located in the middle of the bigger marginalized favelas in South America. Some players of the Venezuelan Go Association, mostly volunteers, give lessons during the school year and make a Final Tournament (by individuals and by teams) at the end of the period. Tournaments help the children a lot to have discipline and to desire to improve. In adittion, we could observe the children appreciate very much to have a ¨judge¨ in their lives.
As the project progressed became necessary to help the volunteer teachers, because there isn´t any guide or method in Spanish language. During the 2012-2013 school year, thanks to the International Go Federation, our project could find the support to improve the quality of the method. Fernando Aguilar, the best player of Latin America, supervises us and created a ¨progressive method¨ used since then to teach, available now for all countries of Latinoamerica in the web page of the Iberamerican Go Federation: www.fedibergo.org/ensenanza

Project aim:

gakko-no-go-4

The aim of the project is, using the moral values and rules of living of the game, help the children to improve their self-esteem and tolerance for those with different ideas than their own, improve in their thinking and reflecting ability, in their capability to stablish and obey group norms, and they have best school performance too.
The place where the children live is an extremely dangerous district. These children became adults too quickly. The target groups are the 4th grade children (10-12 years-old) before they become teens. They start at 4th grade of elementary school and the projec follow-up grow for three years until 6th grade.
After 6th grade they have to go to another schools (Fe y Alegria secundary schools; public or private schools) therefore Go is spreading naturally to other places across the city and country. Slowly but continously. Project can not keep track of them but the Venezuelan Go Association keeps in touch by inviting them to participate in tournaments.
Means of the project:
At the start of the project, there weren´t any means,no go boards and go stones, only the library salon to meet. gakkonogo2012jm Volunteers of the Venezuelan Go Associaion carried out their equipments. For the project, AVG made a big magnetic go board. In the while, children made themselves go boards with paper and go stones with caps of soft drinks. In 2009, The AVG got a set of GO stones donation by Thai Go Association. These stones were brought to Venezuela by a volunteer group, The Go International Exchange Society, which kindly loaded up that heavy material from Japan (the stones traveled Thai-Japan-Venezuela). These were twelve sets which allowed the AVG to expand the Gakko No Go Project to four schools: Maria Inmaculada, Kennedy, Aguirre and Bonet (school for deaf-mute).
We have no Go books, we have the guides written by Mr. Fernando Aguilar
Nowadays, go stones are very difficult and very expensive stuff. A lady of the AVG is making go boards of denim.
The children live in a poor area without facilities, for most of them Internet is only available in the school Jesus Maestro.

    Perspective:
For 2015-2016 school year we have a challenge: keep the project active !!!
During the project we detected something more to do: Give some lectures to the parents and teachers in the schools. Our new challenge is to involve them for better support of the children.
    Wishes:

    gakko-no-go-6

Gakko no Go Project needs gifts to pay a teacher who can give Go classes as a formal matter (inside the school program). Volunteer time (Saturdays) is not adecuate to control and develope the program.
One hour class per week /per school/per teacher costs 10 US$ (transportation to school takes two hours). It means US$400 per year/per school. We would appreciate it very much if somebody can colaborate with us.
Also, if somebody can donate: go stones, stuff for prizes (like books, go t-shirts, etc) also would help a lot

Project name: Implementation of the practice of Go in Prisons, Youth Prison in the Guantanamo province. CUBA
Project description:
The project stems from the assessment of teacher GO Hermes Rodriguez Pons ShoDan. District Chaplain of the Evangelical Pentecostal Church (Assemblies of God) who value what could contribute GO teaching, Christians linked to improving the vision of life goals, behavior, values and human principles and through this effect change in human values internally.

youth-prison-03

The acceptance of the directors of prisons allow inmates attracting young people interested in GO. The GO as something new draws attention to everything that helps the acceptance of others. Taking advantage of the space and time for the teaching of GO, it is a dialogue on human values and how the GO influences the logical, moral and ethical thought of the person.
Support of the Cuban Go Academy in teaching material and equipment which are not always enough, has contributed to extend the practice and teaching. The lack of equipment limits us to continue developing and expanding to other objectives we have identified.

Project aim:
  • Disclosure, teaching and practice of Go in prisons
  • Model the behavior of the internal through teaching, learning and practice of Go
  • Use internal time while serving his penalty
  • To contribute to the rapprochement and improvement of social behavior based on internal values of Go encouraging ethical, human and friendship principles
  • Preparation of inmate study habits in mathematics and other lessons, when he joined the social life
  • Interact and build together their families, providing support for the achievement of a good relationship
  • Achieve them, discipline, order and responsible behavior in social life
Means of the project:
  • Go equipment and teaching material provided by Cuban Go Academy
  • Infrastructure provided by the Youth Prison in Guantanamo Province
Time line:

Geographic extension:

Result(s):
It is a project with great results through the game of GO joined the gospel of Christ, we can achieve in not only good internal athletes also good people who learn the discipline, order, responsibility, maturity in character, be useful to others and in life, helps them make transparent and suitable for a new relationship in the family both socially and spiritually.
We have seen the shift in thinking of the inmates who have joined the project.
During the project we taught the practice of GO to 63 inmates. This is a project of continuity as long as we have the materials and equipment for their maintenance and sustainability.

Institutional Based Access to Go in the Municipality Huellhorst/Germany

Institutional Based Access to Go in the Municipality Huellhorst/Germany

Project name: Institutional Based Access to Go in the Municipality Huellhorst/Germany
Project description:
The starting idea was to offer Go to some pupils of the comprehensive school in Hüllhorst from one teacher and Go-player in 2013. This offer was not in demand at all. The reasons were diagnosed in that nobody knows something about Go except the answer of the question in several crossword-puzzles about an Asian game with two letters.
Project aim:

wc-go-info-day-project-holder

The reasons for the fascination of Go ist clear for everyone who already knows or plays Go, thus the problem of the pupils not choosing Go as a subject in school seems to be solvable in spreading Go by implementing the meaning of go in the heads of as many inhabitants as possible in the whole community from all agegroups. As Hüllhorst is a little municipality, the institutional facilities are overseeable and all age groups can be reached easily by a single person commitment.
The centre of making Go well known and teaching Go is of course the comprehensive school in the municipality Hüllhorst, the only higher education school in the community with about 1300 pupils from class five (10 years old) to class 13 (19 years old, A-level). In the consequences of the experiences of the first Go-class ERG 8 there was established a well equipped special Go-room. In this Go-room all the lessons of the comprehensive school courses as well as the course of the college of further education and the free go-playing time could take place.
So the idea concludes in trying to reach every age group in the municipality of Hüllhorst through using all the existing institutional facilities.
The aim of the project is to spread Go systematically in all public educational facilities in the municipality of Hüllhorst to people from the kindergarden to the retired adults – that means from the age of 3 – 99.

Means of the project:

Huellhorst-2-infographic

The Go-Instruction started in August 2014 with a HEBSACKER ‚Schul-Go-Koffer‘ (15 9*9-Sets) sponsored by the ‚go4school‘ project of the German-Go-Association dgob and – because of the pupils of the ERG 8-class soon increased their Go-skills – additional with a HEBSACKER ‚Schul-AG-Koffer‘ (four 9*9 and three 9*9 combined with 13*13 boards ) financed by the parents-association of the comprehensive school and in addition with three 19*19 boards combined with 13*13 boards from the school-budget.
The Go-Project started with the help of the GELSENWASSER AG award gained in May 2015 which made the project well prepared for every Go-lesson offer for all-age classes that are presumably going to start in August/September 2015. Three more 19*19 boards with stones and gokes, three chessclocks and a lot of teaching books for beginners and advanced players were purchased.
A special Go-room in the comprehensive school is equipped with an interactive whiteboard of the recent generation. modern notebooks (30, bought in 2015) are achievable in the next floor beside the Go-room, Tv, Dvd-player, overhead projector and traditional blackboard can be taken for granted. A Go appropriate decoration will follow. This room ist reserved for all Go-activities of the comprehensive school and it is also to be used by the college of further education and for the future free Go-playing location. The kindergarden and primary schools have their own opportunities.
The primary schools are all now already equipped with the ‚Schul-Go-Koffer‘ too. All the participating institutions, the kindergarden, the elementary-schools and the comprehensive school are already/will be equipped with Filz-Go from Steffi Hebsacker (Image 3) and the all teachers will be provided with teaching material and supported by instructions from the project holder. All the necessary material is already ordered and payed for and its arrival is expected every day. To craft the Filz-Go with the provided material is a necessary task for the kindergardens and the primary schools. All the material was payed for with the funds of the GELSENWASSER award.
Time line:

  • August 2014: First Go-course ERG 8; Go as a subject established in the school schedule. Result: 14 eight graders participate.
  • February 2015: The pupils of the Go-course demanded additional playing time only for Go. Result: The headmaster permitted a course OMA during the lunch break. Result: 5 to 15 pupils from grade 5 to grade 9 every Wednesday.
  • March 2015: Participation in the GELSENWASSER AG Project ‚vonkindauf‘ competition to finance the education-material of current and future activities and with the objective to support Go in the communal primary schools and kindergardens in addition to our comprehensive school. Result: Award of 1600.- €.
  • May 2015: Go-Information-Day (Workshop included) for the target audience teachers of all the pre-schools and primary-schools, interested teachers of our comprehensive school and representatives of all our classes 5th to 10th class. Result: 73 participants.
  • August 2015: Students can choose Go as an elective among other alternatives such as physics, sports etc. starting in August 2015. Result: The students elections are still in progress; for example indications for Go the class 9 about 64 indications (first informal update 2015-05-29, no indications last year).
  • August 2015: Starting Go in the pre-school (kindergarden), primary school, communal youth centre and at the comprehensive school in 4 courses.
  • September 2015: Starting Go in the college of further education.
  • Everything is to be continued as long as possible.
Geographic extension:
All the activities take place in the whole municipality of Hüllhorst, a community with around 13000 inhabitants in an area around 50 km² in East Westphalia, a community in the beautiful rural northeast of North Rhine Westphalia/Germany.. 5 out of 5 elementary-schools (red) , 5 out of 6 kindergardens (pre-schools; blue), the comprehensive school (about 1300 pupils; Z white), the college of further education (c yellow), a free go-playing location (yellow) and a communal youth centre (y green) as you can see in the map of the Municipality of Hüllhorst.

Huellhorst-3

Result(s):
Since the inaugural ERG 8 course started in August 2014 the fourteen boys from this cours were systematically instructed to play Go. They took part at an Go-school-match with the Go-AG from the high school Gymnasium Leopoldinum Detmold /Germany organised by 2k BENSEL and at the Ponnuki Paderborn 9*9 Competition on 30th May 2015 which was subsidized by the parents-association. From this course two teams will participate at the HPM-German-Championship on 19*19 boards in September 2015 in Berlin.
A special Go-room with opportunities of storing the whole teaching material as books, go boards and stones, interactive whiteboard for internet-based education was designated and reserved for all Go-activities.
The amount of pupils choosing Go as a subject increased for example within one year from 7,8 % to 35,6 % in year 9 and in year 10 from 0 % to 8,2 % (in total almost 180 pupils per year; from 2014/15 to 2015/16). In class 9 we will have advanced pupils from the former course ERG 8, so the astonishing amount of elections is probably based on mouth-to-mouth advertising within the class 8.
Current results in the running project are also already several Go-playing children in the community of Hüllhorst outside of school since the Go-information-day at 12th May 2015 (Image 1) and since the elementary-school-day 21th May 2015 (Image 3 and 4) which could be realised with the recently purchased material.

Teacher and project leader for all the lessons in the comprehensive school and for the support of the primary school and preschool teachers is currently only the project holder. The volunteer teachers in the elemantary schools had already been instructed at the Go-information-day in May 2015 and will be further supported by individual visits of the project holder. In their lessons they will be supported by pupils of the comprehensive school according to their place of residence as they already did on the elementary-school-project-day on 21th May 2015 (Image 4). The project holder (Image 2) is qualified by being a teacher and a Go-player who ist professionally taught by a german 6d Go player and by a seminar in March every year headed by an 8p professional.
Financial resources:
The financial resources consist of the schools own budget, the parents association fund and mainly by the GELSENWASSER award. The lessons of the project holder courses are within his duties with the agreement of the principal because they belong to his regular school-schedule.
Perspective:

wc-go-primary-school-day-150521-1

The headmaster is already looking for some new teachers with a Go – qualification and subjects mainly English or Mathematics for the upcoming school years to diversify the Go-lessons.
The kindergarden, primary schools, comprehensive school, the college of further education and a free go-playing location courses and events will be continued. In order to consolidate the interest of the pupils and the adults competitions are planned in our community hall in Hüllhorst.
With all these methods of getting Go spread by an complete institutionally based access program Go should become well-known by people from all age-groups as an fascinating, interesting and sophisticated game witin the municipality of Hüllhorst. The demand for Go lessons should increase. Maybe this concept finds some imitators in other communities in order to establish the game Go more and more in all the education institutions in the wider society.
Wishes:
The headmaster of our comprehensive school ist looking for teachers with a Go –qualification. The material sources could be extended with further 19*19 boards for the adult-appropriate level and to motivate the pupils by using fine material with adequate stones and gokes and with more teaching material.
We are actively searching for experts who could give Go-presentations and lectures at our school and the community hall.

Images and several videos can be send, there are a lot of them from all the already realised events.

Project name: dwyrin
Project description:
My project, a youtube channel youtube.com/dwyrin spreads go and helps others improve their general level of play. What is particularly unique about this project is that a way had to be discovered to bring knowledge of go to others who may not have otherwise encountered it in an online setting. In other words, there had to be separate draw to the channel, other than go, so that they could discover go while visiting the channel. It’s not unlike giving go demonstrations at a bookstore to draw in new players.
dwyrin.tv_viewcount
To accomplish this I decided to upload video game playthroughs, and reviews of other strategy games. Thus increasing the likelihood that they would be interested in the greatest strategy game of them all; Go when looking across my channel’s other content. With over 14,000 subscribers and 4.8 million views on the channel, and over 100,000 views per month, I daresay I am accomplishing this goal quite thoroughly.
Veteran Go players find my channel and learn from my games against high dan level players from IGS, Tygem, Netmarble, and more… learn from the lectures I give every other week, or even simply hear about games I thought were well played and worth study. Meanwhile new players, who haven’t heard of the game before, but are interested in strategy games, get exposed to Go and can choose to learn more about it.
Project aim:
The aim of my youtube channel was a simple one. Create a youtube channel www.youtube.com/dwyrin and spread go and help raise the general standard level of players throughout the English speaking Go world.
Means of the project:
In no particular order… Video, Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, twitch.tv, Various online Go Servers such as; KGS, IGS, WBaduk, Netmarble, OGS, and Tygem. Video recording, Video Editing, Sound Editing, Graphics Design, Public Relations, Extensive Record Keeping, Photography, Web Design, and Collaboration.

Geographic extension:

Result(s):
The result of my project is that I have tens of thousands of views across many of the go videos I have uploaded to my channel https://www.youtube.com/dwyrin . I am thanked every week for my contributions to the go community and receive emails from people telling me how they’ve struggled with some part of Go that they now understand. I receive emails from people stating that they’ve met others around the world who recommended my videos to them, and when told they already knew who I was, they laughed. I’ve had couples watch my videos for Go while their partner watches for the other part of my content. I’ve had a popular streamer take notice and request a lesson, to an audience of over ten thousand of his viewers.
Unfortunately it’s not all roses. I’ve had hate mail explaining that I should only put out go videos and stop uploading other videos thus ceasing my attempts to draw new people to go. I’ve had people send me hate mail complaining about the go videos and how I should only concentrate on the video game videos. There is nothing quite so vile as an anonymous person venting their anger at another without fear of reprisal. You learn to ignore it.
Public exposure:
My largest bout of public exposure came from a streamer on twitch.tv who had an audience of around twenty thousand viewers. He took a few lessons and streamed them for his followers. I took great pleasure in telling people where they could learn more about the game those few weeks afterwards.
Human resources:
This is mostly a project of one however, I have received help from a student of mine who assisted me greatly in the development of a website Dwyrin.tv to better categorize my videos. And, naturally, I could not draw people to the videos without so many of my fans watching and ‘liking’ my videos as they are released.
Financial resources:
I do receive the occasional donation from those who appreciate the work i’m doing, however any expenditures for microphones, cameras, computer upgrades etc.. come from my own pocket.

Go Seigen Lecture

Perspective:
I feel that I’ve hardly scratched the surface in terms of what kind of videos I can bring the Go community. Go is world wide. I hope one day I can bring in professional Go players to give lectures on topics my viewers have repeatedly expressed interest in. If I am truly lucky, then one day I might be able to travel abroad with a camera at the ready to introduce my viewers to even more players and show them what Go is like in places they may never be able to visit.
Wishes:
Monetary support is definitely needed to grow beyond the content I am already providing. It’s the only way I’d be able to afford to pay professionals to share their insights into the topics my viewers are interested in. It is also the only way to be able to give even more of my time to my projects for their continued learning and enjoyment.
Additional comments:
It has been my honor and privilege to create all this wonderful content for the go community. As long as even one person continues to enjoy and learn something from my material, or one person discovers go by being lured onto my channel, I will continue to make videos.

Description

Thinking Learning Go Style

The project provides a series of Go lessons in elementary and/or high school.
First lessons will introduce and show the rules of Go to students.
In a second period a Go teacher will offer exercises about understanding the way to play the game (as life and death, connecting, ko, etc.). Students will be engaged to reason about how opponent player can think. Great significance will be given to a correct and rational reasoning. During the training the psychological Theory of Mind will be introduced.

Students will play Go in dedicated hours.
The project will also include a Go Open Day (or Days) at schools, during which students will teach/introduce the rules of Go to visitors.

Objectives

– to introduce the game of Go and rules (in my country it is not well-known at all)
– to improve students rational thinking
– to improve students lateral thinking
– to improve student consciousness of Theory of Mind
– to introduce Go game and rules in a city with a school (Open day)

Realisation

Good organization is required and Go teachers need to be prepared to teach children/adolescents. The project has not been realized yet.>/div>
